Tech Science Class!

Every Tuesday we come to visit Tamaki College for something called ‘Tech’. Tech is made up of either 5 to 4 classes; Science/STEM, Cooking, Hard Material, Sewing, and Te-oro. We usually rotate every 11-12 weeks to a different class or subject. This term, my group and I are in STEM. Today in STEM class we learned the safety rules of a bunsen burner, and how we should use it.

A bunsen burner has many risks, and you should always follow any safety procedures you might’ve learned.

HOW TO USE A BUNSEN BURNER:

  • Place the burner on a workboard and clear the space
  • Connect the hose securely to the gas tap
  • Close the air hole by turning the collar
  • Light the matches or the lighter
  • Turn the gas tap on
  • Put the flame to the top of the barrel for the gas to light up
  • Turn The collar to adjust the flame to blue or yellow as needed

Tupaia the Master Navigator

Today for our reading, we had to read about Tupaia the Master Navigator. Although this is a low level book (Especially for our year), most classes in my school must read this every year. The reason that is, is because some classes actually make waka’s. Once we’re done creating our waka’s we take them to our pool and see if they actually work. Another reason we’re meant to read the book, is because our whole school learns about olden-day navigation, and how they had learned it.

As you look at the image above, you will notice that I’ve created a Venn Diagram about Tupaia and James cook. I’ve written what they have in common, and what their separate traits are. If you read it, then you’ll be able to tell what kind of people they are, and how they share out their energy.

Kupe and The Giant Wheke

For this week, we had to read a book called ‘Kupe and the Giant Wheke’, which is originally for year 5’s and 6’s. The story is based on how the main character — Kupe — had hunted down a Giant Wheke (Octopus). The reason Kupe actually hunted down the Giant Wheke was because it had just kept on stealing bait and fish from his village’s fish supply. The Giant Wheke had actually eaten all of the fish and left none for Kupe and his villagers, which caused them to starve. Kupe had actually discussed matters with the owner of the octopus, but the owner did not have a single care about Kupe or his villagers starvation. If you read the story, you will see what adventures and discoveries actually happen!

That is all for now because I don’t want to spoil anything that happens later on in the story.

Across the sea

For our reading subject we had to read a story called ‘Across The Sea’. The story was related to the olden day navigation, and how they had learned about it over time. Many people actually think that the story was actually based on the past, but in reality it was actually based in the future. If you read the story, then you come across a part where there are ruins that are buildings, which are drowned in the depths of water. The reason the buildings are actually drowned in water, has something to do with global warming and climate change. The main character in the story, Ihaka, is shown to be a curious and thoughtful boy. That is all I think about the story, but if you know anything about the story, then perhaps you could tell me more about it.

Mothers Day

Mothers day is a day celebrated by both mothers and families. Its a day where families show their gratitude towards mothers by showering them with gifts and love.

Mothers day was actually originated by a lady in the 1900s named ‘Anna Jarvis’. She had created that day because she had thought that many holidays back then were mainly celebrated about men, and not women. Anna Jarvis had gotten all the mothers in the village to write letters about how Mothers Day should be a thing. And in 1907 that was when Mothers day was officially a proper holiday.

Soon after it had become a proper holiday, she soon became disgusted with how it turned out; Due to how the holiday had become commercialized. She actually urged people to stop buying gifts, letters, flowers, etc. So as she died, she had actually tried to disown Mothers Day, as she no longer wanted to be known as the person who created Mothers Day.

ANZAC Day

ANZAC day is a day celebrated by both New Zealand and Australia. The word ‘ANZAC’ stands for ‘Australia, New Zealand, Army Corps’, with the ‘P’ being silent at the end.

The reason ANZAC Day exists is so we can honor the soldiers who had fought in World War 1. The way we show our gratitude is by attending dawn services, laying poppies, and visiting war memorials. The poppies are actually a symbol / sign of remembrance towards the people who had fought in battle.

Their bravery will be remembered and celebrated throughout many, many years. They had fought selflessly in battle, putting their country’s needs before their own.

Making Truffles

Today during tech class we had made chocolate Truffles. Since there were only 6  people today in cooking class we had all gotten split up into three groups of two, meaning, I was no longer stuck with the person I usually work with, who is my friend.

The groups were made up of girl, boy, girl, boy. To not cause any disruption whilst we are trying to cook, or, when we’re getting given instructions on what to do. The person I was working with was a boy who’s in my classroom, but his details are not important since he barely helped me with anything. Like, literally.

Anyways, the ingredients will be listed below!

Ingredients.

  • Firstly, you crush up oreos and place them in a bowl.
  • Secondly, you use one quarter of cocoa powder and mix it together with the oreos.
  • Thirdly, you grab a measuring cup and fill it up to 100 millimetres with sweet condensed milk.
  • Fourthly,  you mix all of the ingredients together until you think it looks ready.
  • Fifthly, you pick out small pieces and circle them into small balls.
  • Lastly, you add whatever topping’s you want and set them into the fridge.

And that’s how you make truffles — We made them this way, but if you have a different way to make them, then that is up to you.

Athletics day

That was my outfit for Athletics day! Athletics day is a day where our school can make cherished memories through sports, and team games. Its a day where people can compete with different house colours, what do I mean by house colours? Well, as you can see in the image Im wearing the colour orange! Which is ONE of the house colours, of course there are multiple people in a whole group, but I’ve only showed my own picture.

There were 3 different groups of colours, where all classes throughout the school were combined. The different colours were, Orange, Purple, and last but not least, Pink! The house / group colours were having to compete with each other, there were team sports and running. During the team sports EVERYONE in your group / house HAD to participate, or your team would lose points (Unless you’re injured).

Athletics day is a day where people can make cherished moments with throughout the whole school, this day is mainly filled with warm smiles, and laughing children. People also mainly show their competitive side once they start to play! Which isn’t surprising since our school is all about sports.

Now, tell me, Does your school do Athletics day? Or a day similar to ours? If so, do you guys make cherished moments / memories, that you and your class can smile about together?
